The effects of climate change on extreme sea level in Victoria

The Minister for Environment and Climate Change recently released the CSIRO Technical Reports: The Effect of Climate Change on Extreme Sea Levels in Port Phillip Bay and the Victorian Coast. These two reports provide a technical analysis of extreme sea levels in Victoria under a range of climate change scenarios. Extreme sea levels include the impacts of storm surges, high tides, and sea level rise. This information will be useful as an input into strategic planning processes and to give an indication of where more detailed studies may be needed.

This work has been undertaken as part of the Future Coasts Program - a partnership initiative between the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Department of Planning and Community Development designed to help Victoria better understand and plan for the risks associated with sea level rise along the Victorian coast. The program is producing information about the impacts of sea level rise along the Victorian coast, with a focus on coastal erosion and flooding.

Vic LandCarbon - modelling the stored carbon in Victoria's forests

Victoria is the first state to model the amount of carbon stored in our public forests, parks and reserves using the carbon accounting system proposed in the Commonwealth Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS). The project's preliminary modelling results which show how much carbon is stored on Victoria's public land and how bushfire, planned burning and harvesting impacts Victoria's carbon stores.

The Vic LandCarbon is an exciting new initiative that will help inform our understanding of carbon in Victoria and build the science we need to consider the carbon asset of our public land to drive green jobs and future investment in carbon storage on both public and private land.

Green Roofs Research Program

The Victorian Government is helping the state’s businesses and residents tackle climate change by planting green roofs through the University of Melbourne's Green Roof Research Program.

The research program will seek to identify which plants are best adapted to be grown on roofs and design light-weight soils for roofs. It will seek to better understand the attitudes of building owners, developers, planners and other stakeholders about green roods and examine the impact of green roofs on stormwater runoff.

The research will be used in models to design purpose-specific green roofs for Australian climates.

The project is also supported by Melbourne Water, the City of Melbourne and the Committee for Melbourne.
