Discussion Leaders and Summit Delegates

The Discussion Leaders at the Victorian Climate Change Summit include some of Victoria and Australia’s pre-eminent thinkers, scientists, authors and activists on climate change. They were selected to bring a range of expertise and perspectives to the issue being discussed at the Summit.

The Summit Delegates at the Summit represent a very broad cross section of the Victorian community. They were selected to provide a voice to sectors of the community, which have not previously had a voice in the development of climate change policy.

George Negus

George Negus is a familiar face to most Australians as a well respected journalist and current host of SBS televisions Dateline. George was also a founding presenter on 60 Minutes and Foreign Correspondent.

Throughout his career George has interviewed some of the worlds most high profile individuals. This year alone, he has travelled to Bangladesh, Ireland, England, Canada and the United States for Dateline, and has interviewed the Prime Minister of Lebanon, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, billionaire George Soros, Zimbabwe's Opposition Leader and the Dalai Lama.

Like any versatile journalist George has also covered a huge gambit of community issues ranging from the treatment of the intellectually disabled through to the scandal of uranium dump sites in outback Aboriginal settlements. He is also an accomplished author of a number of books including The World From Islam.

Dr Penny Whetton

Dr Penny Whetton

Dr Whetton is leader of the Climate Change Group of The Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research, a partnership between CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology.

A major component of her research has been analysing and constructing regional scenarios of future climate change and Dr Whetton has been instrumental in preparing the CSIRO’s Australian climate change projections for the past 15 years. She is a lead author of the regional projections chapter in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on climate change’s Fourth Assessment Report released in November 2007.

Dr Whetton’s team’s work was recognised with the 2003 Eureka Prize for Environmental Research.

   
Tony Nicholson

Tony Nicholson

Tony Nicholson is the Executive Director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence, one of Australia’s largest community sector agencies, and has 27 years experience working to improve the conditions of the most disadvantaged in society.

A social worker by training, Mr Nicholson spent 14 years as Chief Executive Officer of Hanover Welfare Services, a Melbourne-based agency recognised as a leader in addressing homelessness.

Mr Nicholson has vast experience in policy and service development, and an in depth knowledge of the issues facing disadvantaged communities and the drivers that can bring about positive change.

   
Mike Waller

Mike Waller

Mike Waller is the newly appointed Chairman of Sustainability Victoria and a Senior Fellow in the Australian Centre for Science, Innovation and Society. He is also director of Heuris Partners, a consulting company specialising in strategy development.

For nearly six years, Mr Waller was Director of Public Policy and then Chief Economist and head of Environment and Community Relations Policy with BHP Billiton. Before joining BHP, Mr Waller held senior government positions advising both United Kingdom and Australian governments on issues of sustainability. He was head of the microeconomic division of Prime Minister and Cabinet and deputy head of the Australian Department of Transport.

   
Professor Robin Batterham AO

Professor Robin Batterham AO

Profesor Robin Batterham is Group Chief Scientist with Rio Tinto Limited, President of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and a Professorial Fellow in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the University of Melbourne.

From 1999 to 2005, Professor Batterham was Chief Scientist to the Australian Government providing advice on science, technology and innovation issues. He was also Executive Officer of the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council of which he remains a member.

Professor Batterham has had a distinguished career in research and technology in both the public and private sectors, and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to strategic thinking about how to respond to climate change.  

   
Professor Ross Garnaut

Professor Ross Garnaut

Professor Ross Garnaut is a Professor of Economics in the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University, where he held the post since 1989.

In April 2007, Professor Garnaut was commissioned by the Australian States and Territories, and in late 2007, by the Commonwealth Government, to review the impact of climate change on the Australian economy and explore medium to long-term policies in response.

Professor Garnaut is chair of a number of international companies and research organisations, including the International Food Policy Research Institute, and he was Australian Ambassador to China from 1985 to 1988.

   
Councillor Janet Bolitho

Councillor Janet Bolitho

Janet Bolitho is the Deputy Mayor of the City of Port Phillip and the President of the Association of Bayside Municipalities, representing the 10 councils that front Port Phillip Bay. Ms Bolitho was Mayor of the City of Port Phillip in 2006 and 2007.

As an active member of the local Port Melbourne community, Ms Bolitho has insight into how grassroots action develops and becomes highly effective. She gives her time and expertise to many local issues and groups being involved in the Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society and the Friends of Port Melbourne Foreshore.

She has gained her experience in roles as diverse as a school bursar in the Solomon Islands, an Oxfam campaign worker and teacher of the Alexander Technique.

   
Erwin Jackson

Erwin Jackson

Erwin Jackson is the Director of Policy and Research at The Climate Institute, which is an independent group that works with community, business and government to drive climate change solutions.

Mr Jackson has nearly 20 years experience in climate change policy and research, leading Australian and international programs aimed at reducing greenhouse pollution. He has represented non-government groups and advised government and business as well as being an expert reviewer of the reports of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on climate change.

Mr Jackson has also researched and written a range of publications on climate change and energy policy, and has lectured widely from the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London to local community group meetings.

   
Bob Welsh

Bob Welsh

Bob Welsh is the Chief Executive of VicSuper and the Chair of the Investor Group on Climate Change, which represents institutional investors interested in the impact of climate change on investments.

At VicSuper Mr Welsh has been the driving force behind the organisation’s adoption of sustainability as its central operating principle since 2000.  These groundbreaking efforts have seen VicSuper win environmental awards from the Banksia Environmental Foundation and the United Nations Association of Australia.

Mr Welsh has extensive experience in managing superannuation funds and has also held senior finance positions in several large service industries including seven years as director of finance for Australia's largest rural water authority.

Tim Orton

Tim Orton is the founder and Managing Director of The Nous Group, a leading Australian management consulting firm that provides strategic advisory services, leadership, people development and ICT consulting services.

Tim works with CEOs, Boards and C-suite executives, and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s foremost facilitators and strategic thinkers. Nous was commissioned by Department of Premier and Cabinet to provide the report, Understanding the Potential to Reduce Victoria’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

A Rhodes Scholar, Tim holds honours degrees in Economics from Oxford University and Engineering from the University of Melbourne. He first began his career as a metallurgist and has held positions with McKinsey in Sydney, New York and London.

Alan Pears is an Adjunct Professor at RMIT University and a co-director of Sustainable Solutions.  Alan’s experience includes building energy and environmental rating and regulation, green building projects, educational software, green appliance development, industrial and business energy and environmental management, and policy analysis.

   
Professor Amanda Lynch

Professor Amanda Lynch

Professor Amanda Lynch is a Federation Fellow with the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences at Monash University where she conducts research on a range of subjects relating to the meteorology of extremes, regional climate modelling, and climate adaptation policy.  Amanda is also the Head of the Climate Program at the Monash Sustainability Institute.

Amanada McKenzie

Amanda is currently the National Coordinator of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, the peak youth body on climate change which represents youth organisations across Australia.  Amanda has also been active in establishing ASCENT - the Australian Climate Change Education Network, and in helping to organise the International Youth Climate Conference.

Angela Altair

Angela Altair is the Deputy Mayor of the Hobsons Bay City Council. She is also a journalist, PR practitioner and environmental consultant with degrees in Journalism and Planning and Environment. She chairs the Council’s Sustainable Environment Advisory Group, is Chair of the Victorian Local Sustainability Network and is a member of the Victorian Local Sustainability Advisory Committee.

   

Andrew Pickering

Andrew Pickering is a co-founder of Cleantech Ventures, a venture investment company focusing on early stage clean technologies, which manages investments for the Victorian Government established $30m Centre for Energy and Greenhouse Technologies and the $50m Cleantech Australia Fund.

Belinda Durate

Belinda Duarte is National project manager, Indigenous Employment Program with AFL SportsReady.  She is also a qualified teacher, a former elite athlete and an ambassador for the state governments Go for Your Life initiative as well as a member of the Board of Governance for VicHealth and the Indigenous Leadership Network Victoria.

Beth Davidson

Beth Davidson has been a Councillor at Surfcoast Shire Council since 1998, including four years as Mayor, and is currently President of the Victorian Local Governance Association.  She is a former member of the CFA Board and is Victoria’s representative on the National Seachange Taskforce.

Brad Page

Brad Page was appointed CEO of the Energy Supply Association of Australia in February 2004. He had a long public service career previously and headed the secretariat for the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) energy market review in 2002. He chairs the CSIRO Energy and Transport Sector Advisory Council.

Brian Boyd is currently Secretary of the Victorian Trades Hall Council, and a member of the ACTU Executive.  He has represented the building and manufacturing industries in a number of roles, including the VWA Workcover Advisory Committee, the Building Industry Consultative Committee and the Manufacturing Consultative Committee.

Brian Negus is the General Manager Public Policy for RACV. He was formerly the State’s Deputy Director of Public Transport with the Department of Infrastructure. Prior to this, Brian held two successive senior management positions with VicRoads as Regional Manager of the Metropolitan South East Region and Metropolitan North West Region.

Bruce Campbell is CEO of the Alternative Technology Association (ATA), a member based organisation that has been supporting individuals who want to make their homes more sustainable for over 25 years. The ATA publishes magazines, provides advice and advocates for sustainable living. Bruce is an Engineer with extensive corporate and management experience.

Bruce Esplin was appointed as Victoria’s first Emergency Services Commissioner.  With over twenty years in the emergency management sector, Bruce has played a central role in the response to many major emergencies in Victoria including bushfires, gas explosions, extreme storms and floods, and critical infrastructure failures.  

   
Cameron O'Reilly

Cameron O'Reilly

Cameron O’Reilly is the Executive Director of the ERAA, the peak industry body representing retailers of electricity and gas in the National Electricity Market.  Cameron is a Director of the Australian Gas Industry Trust, and has been awarded the Fulbright Australia-US Alliance Studies professional scholarship to look at reducing emissions from the stationary energy sector. 

   
 

Cameron Walker

Cam has worked with Friends of the Earth (FoE) Melbourne since 1989, and is currently Campaigns Coordinator.   He has been active on sustainability and climate change issues since 2000 and has recently finished a book on climate refugees. Cam has worked extensively with NGOs and local communities in Latin America, Europe and, most recently Africa. He currently lectures part time in the School of Social Science at RMIT.

Carolyn Lloyd is currently Deputy Chair of VicUrban and a Member of Sustainability Victoria and the Sustainability Fund.  Carolyn specialises in the application of sustainability and environmental issues to the building and development industries. She has held a number of senior positions including CEO of the Housing Industry Association and Chairperson of the Building Practitioners Board.

   
Catherine Smith

Catherine Smith

Cath Smith is the CEO of the Victorian Council of Social Services, which is the peak organisation of the non-government social and community services sector.  Within this role she works to raise awareness of the existence, causes and effects of poverty and inequality, and contributes to policies and initiatives aimed at mitigating these issues.

Cheryl Batagol

Cheryl Batagol has extensive experience in the waste management industry, and is Chair of Melbourne Water and Deputy Chair of Sustainability Victoria.  Cheryl’s other roles have included Chairperson of EcoRecycle Victoria, Director City West Water, Southern Rural Water, member of the Commonwealth Games Advisory Committee (Environment) and Director, Tintern Schools.

Dr Charles Plott is an American economist and currently the Edward S. Harkness Professor of Economics and Political Science at the California Institute of Technology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a pioneer in the field of experimental economics. His research interests include behavioural foundations of economics and political science.

Professor Chris Ryan

Professor Chris Ryan was foundation professor of Design and Sustainability at RMIT until 2004, Director of the National (Key) Centre for Environmental Design from 1989-97 and Director of the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics, Lund Sweden 1998-2002.  His current positions include Adjunct Professor in Design Architecture and Building at the University of Technology Sydney and in Industrial Design at RMIT.

   
David Craven

David Craven

As Executive Director with the GBCA, David is accountable for the activity of the Council in the states of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, as well as for the production of research reports, such as the recently released Valuing Green. Prior to joining the GBCA, David worked with Sustainability Victoria, where he led the Sustainable Buildings function for five years. During this time he developed industry partnerships to green the commercial office sector and, in partnership with the CSIRO, secured the rights for SB08 Melbourne, the next World Sustainable Buildings conference, to be held in Melbourne in September 2008. David also spent ten years as a practicing architect, and three years with the Centre for Design at RMIT University as a research consultant.

David Davis is the Leader of the Opposition in the Victorian Legislative Council. He currently serves as Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change.  He was first elected to Parliament in 1996. Prior to entering politics, David worked as a Chiropractor for 11 years.

David Karoly

David Karoly is a Professor of Meteorology and Federation Fellow in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Prior to this, he held the Williams Chair in Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma.
He is an expert in climate change science and was heavily involved in the preparation of the IPCC Fourth Assessment report.

   
 

Denise Boyd

As the ACF’s Campaigns Director since 2006, Denise Boyd is responsible for managing a highly skilled and motivated team of campaigners and works at a national level with government, community and business leaders to achieve the best outcomes for the environment. Denise plays a key role in delivering ACF’s organisational goals and she manages all ACF’s conservation campaigns.  Denise has more than 14 years experience in major environment groups.  She has been Toxics Campaigner, Oceans Campaigner and Campaign Coordinator for Greenpeace Australia and head of programs for the International Fund for Animal Welfare in London and Sydney.

Dick Gross is the President of the MAV, having been elected in 2006. He    is also a Councillor for the City of Port Phillip. Dick trained as a lawyer and has a background in consumer and corporate law with the National Companies and Securities Commission. He was a co-founder and the first coordinator of the Consumer Credit Legal Service.

Don is currently a member of the Sustainability Victoria Board. He has extensive experience in industry, agriculture, local government and sustainability issues. Don is currently the Chair of Keep Australia Beautiful National and a Board Member of Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria. He is a former Board Member of North East Water and a former Mayor of Indigo Shire.

Donna is a climate change specialist with extensive risk, strategy and communications experience across Australia, Asia, the UK and US. Focusing on climate change and carbon risks, governance, opportunities and policy analysis and compliance, she advises boards, business and government on developing responses and management frameworks to address expected environmental, market and social changes.

   
Eric Bottomly

Eric Bottomley

Eric Bottomley has taught geography, economics and environmental science in schools for 20 years, and was coordinator of CERES Education for 13 years before transferring to his role of Team Leader- CERES Sustainability Projects. He has concurrently been a sessional lecturer and tutor at the Graduate School of Environmental Science, Monash, and has twice worked on secondment at the University of PNG.

Eric has written a number of books on Development and Global Warming and designed much of the CERES Educational program and the Water Conservation project.  Presently his major preoccupation is implementing the Victorian Sustainable Schools Program. AuSSI-Vic

   
Fiona O'Hehir

Fiona O’Hehir

Fiona O’Hehir is the CEO of Greenbank Australia, is the largest independent environmental instrument trader in Australia. The company deals in all the various federal and state emissions trading initiatives. She has extensive experience in the renewable energy, energy efficiency and measurement and verification fields and has been a long standing board member of the Business Council for Sustainable Energy, now known as the Clean Energy Council.

Fiona is BP Australia's Environmental Affairs Manager. She advises the company on the business implications of climate change policy, and represents BP in discussions with government, industry, NGOs and community. Previously, she worked in environmental management in both BP's exploration and refining businesses, and at their head office in London.

   
Dr Geoff Love

Geoff Love

Geoff Love is currently the Director of Meteorology at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and is a Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II.  Prior to this he held the role of Secretary of the IPCC, located in the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Secretariat in Geneva from 2002.

Geoff Vincent

Following a successful 35 year career in conservation and land management in NSW, New Zealand, South Australia and Victoria, Geoff established his own environmental consulting firm in 2007, of which he is Director and Principal. Specialising in ecological sustainability and the effects of climate change on biodiversity and protected area management, G W Vincent and Associates services clients in Australia and Asia.

George Lekakis has extensive experience as an advocate for ethnic communities and is currently the Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission. He was formerly Chairperson of the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria.  He has also served on various government and community boards including the Victorian Industrial Relations Task force and the Community Support Fund Advisory Council.

Georgie Ferrari is the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria.  Georgie has worked in the not for profit sector for the past 12 years.  She has worked in the areas of youth, health, housing, community education and violence in New Zealand, NSW and Victoria.  Georgie is a passionate advocate for young people and the youth affairs sector.

Dr Graham Mitchell is recognised as one of Australia's leading biological scientists. He is the former Director of Melbourne Zoo, and Research Director for CSL Limited. He also led research into the parasite vaccines at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. He currently serves as a Chief Scientist for the Department of Primary Industries.

Greg Barber is a member of the Greens in the Victorian Legislative Council.  He was first elected to Parliament in 2006. Prior to entering politics, Greg worked for the Wilderness Society, Cities for Climate Change Protection and Environment Victoria. He has a Bachelor of Science from LaTrobe University and an MBA from Melbourne University.

Ian Hamm has extensive experience in policy development and program management through his work with the Federal Government in the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and the Victorian Government’s Department of Justice and Department of Planning and Community Development.  Ian is currently the Deputy Director of Aboriginal Affairs Victoria.

Dr Ian McPhail AM is the inaugural Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability in Victoria.  His experience in senior roles across state and federal government include Executive Direction of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Chair of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Executive Director of the Commonwealth EPA.

Janet Rice is currently in her second term as a Councillor of Maribyrnong City Council.  Janet is the immediate past chair of the Metropolitan Transport Forum and Vice President of Victorian Local Governance Association. She has been passionate about climate change since studying meteorology at university over 25 years ago.

Dr Janine Kirk AM

Janine Kirk is currently a partner at Ernst & Young, heading its Government practice in Victoria. Prior to this, she was the Executive Director of the Committee for Melbourne from 1995 to 2007. Janine is on the Innovation Economy Advisory Board and is a board member of the Victorian Endowment for Science, Technology and Innovation (VESKI). She is also a member of the Tourism Victoria Board and a member of the Expert Review Panel for the Metropolitan Sewerage Strategy.

Jennifer Cunich

Jennifer Cunich is currently the Executive Director of the Property Council of Victoria.  The Property Council provides the leading voice for the property industry in Victoria on key issues relating to planning strategy, urban and economic growth and the environment.

Professor Jim Falk

Professor Falk is currently the Director of the Australian Centre for Science, Innovation and Society (ACSIS) at the University of Melbourne.  Prior to joining the University, Professor Falk was Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Science and Technology Studies at Victoria University. He has also held the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Western Sydney.

John Stanley is the Executive Director of the Business Association of Victoria, and has a strong background in applied economics and social research.  He is also a Director of Metlink and a member of the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council. 

   
John Thwaites

John Thwaites

John Thwaites was Deputy Premier of the state of Victoria from 1999 to 2007, and served as Minister for Health, Minister for Planning and Minister for Environment, Water and Climate Change and Victorian Communities during this time.  John is currently the Chair of the Climate Group (Australia), Chair of the Monash Sustainability Institute and a director of the Australian Green Building Council.

Jordina Rust is a university student and the Chairperson of the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria. A volunteer for a number of community organisations, she has been actively involved in youth affairs for over five years. She was on the planning committee for the Plan International Youth Forum and participated in the National Youth Roundtable in 2003. She has also been involved in several youth run environmental groups.

Kathy Mitchell has a background in planning, academia and local government and is the Chief Panel Member of Planning Panels Victoria (PPV).  She is also the President and a Fellow of the Victorian Planning and Environmental Law Association (VPELA).

   
Keith Reynard

Cr Keith Reynard

Keith Reynard is a Director on the Board of the Strathfieldsaye & District Community Enterprise Limited (SDCE Ltd), an innovative community business partnership that supports local community projects. He is also chairperson of the Sustainable Strathfieldsaye Committee ‘Focus on Energy’ program. His history of community involvement has led him to becoming a Councillor with the City of Greater Bendigo since November 2004. Keith has a Bachelor of Applied Science, specializing in soil and environmental science.

Kevin Hennessy

Kevin Hennessy is a Principle Research Scientist at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research. He has been doing climate change research for over 20 years and is currently leading the Adaptation, Risk and Policy team of the Climate Change Research Group. He is also a member of the NSW Greenhouse Advisory Panel and a Coordinating Lead Author of the “Australia and New Zealand” chapter of the 2007 IPCC assessment of “Climate change impacts, adaptation and vulnerability”.

   
Kirsten Larsen

Kirsten Larsen

Kirsten Larsen manages policy research at the Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab at the University of Melbourne. She is currently analysing the sustainability and security of Victoria's food system, examining: impacts on the environment; vulnerability to environmental risks, resource constraints, social/political responses and innovation opportunities for sustainable food systems in Victoria.

Larissa Brown is the founder and Executive Director of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership. She attended the United Nations Climate conference in Bali 2007 as a youth representative, won the Brian Robinson Foundation Fellowship in 2006, received the British Council 2006 award for Communicating Climate Change and was listed as one of the top 10 most influential environmentalists by the Age magazine.

Laura Donnellan is the Climate Change Program Coordinator for Moreland City Council. Laura also works closely with the Moreland Energy Foundation and is involved in the CERES climate change action group. Laura is a member of the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (NAGA) and the Melbourne Behaviour Change Network. Laura has previously worked with ICLEI Oceania and Greening Australia Victoria.

Cr Leo Tellefson

Cr Leo Tellefson is a third term Councillor of the Buloke Shire and has a long history in the rural workforce, in the rail and meat industries, environment protection, and is currently reliant on farming. Leo is the current Chairman of the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, and the Wimmera Sustainability Alliance. He is also a board member of the East Wimmera Health Service and a board Member of the Central Murray Regional Waste Management Group

Libby Mears is currently the Chair of the Victorian Coastal Council. In 2004, she was elected as a Councillor of the Surf Coast Shire and in 2006 was elected Mayor. Libby currently serves on a number of council committees including Chair of a joint working party between the Shire and the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee aimed at advancing integrated coastal planning within the Shire and is a member of Council's Environment Advisory Committee. Libby's professional background is in public health with a keen interest in the way environments impact on the health, wellbeing and connectedness of communities.
