The effects of climate change are already being experienced across Victoria, including higher average temperatures and reduced rainfall. Reducing our emissions will help lessen the impact of climate change, but it will not prevent it - some degree of climate change is already locked in.
The Government provides information about the impacts of climate change, based on the latest science, to help communities make decisions and manage risks effectively. Read more about the impacts of climate change on Victoria’s regions in the Climate-Ready Victoria fact sheets.
Developing a robust approach to adaptation is critical to building resilience in our communities, and securing a healthy and prosperous future for all Victorians.
Victoria's Climate Change Adaptation Plan 2017 - 2020
Victoria's Climate Change Adaptation Plan 2017-2020 lays out the government's plan of action for the next four years, to help Victorians meet the challenges and act on the opportunities of climate change.
The Adaptation Plan will:
- build a detailed understanding of Victoria's exposure to climate change risks and impacts
- catalyse partnerships for integrated and effective responses to climate change
- tackle immediate priorities to reduce climate change risks
It will help us all play our part and work together to achieve our vision for Victoria: a thriving natural environment and a healthy, prosperous, safe and vibrant place to work and live for all Victorians, and for the thousands of visitors we welcome each year.
The Adaptation Plan includes a commitment to monitor its implementation and effectiveness. Read the Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting and Improvement Framework for Climate Change Adaptation in Victoria (PDF, 1.6 MB).
Supporting our regions to adapt
Under Victoria’s Climate Change Adaptation Plan 2017-2020 the Government has committed to helping our regional communities and organisations work together to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
The Supporting our Regions to Adapt program is a $9.3 million program funded over the next three years through the Sustainability Fund. This program will support collaborative action between Government and regional communities that reduces the risk presented by climate change and helps Victorians meet the challenges and act on the opportunities of climate change.
Regional Climate Change Gap Analysis and Snapshot Reports
In 2017-18, each DELWP regional office completed a climate change adaptation regional gap analysis to develop regional priorities for adaptation based on the climate change impacts each region is currently or expected to experience.
Based on the results of this work a Snapshot Report was produced for each of the six DELWP regions to highlight the state of adaptation in the region and showcase the regional adaptation priorities.
Read the Regional Adaptation Snapshot Reports: www.climatechange.vic.gov.au/information-and-resources
The outcomes of the gap analysis, along with ongoing regional collaboration, will help inform the priorities for action and support a robust approach to adaptation under the Supporting our Regions to Adapt program over the next three years.
